Deerfield Beach, FL, September 1st, 2016 — Out of 770,946 children in Florida, living in poverty, 622,423 are at risk of hunger every day. Since 2005 the Florida Introduces Physical Activity and Nutrition to Youth (FLIPANY)’s mission is to empower youth and their families through physical activity and nutrition education programs while raising awareness and creating policies for a healthier community.
On August 26, the annual Dinner & Auction of Chefs Up Front was hosted aboard the South Beach Lady Yacht. Van Kirk & Sons was a supporting sponsor of the event to help assist FLIPANY with the necessary funds to implement the Cooking Matters™ program to fulfill their role as the national Florida partner of Share Our Strength.
Chefs Up Front is a unique dining experience, where celebrated chefs create and prepare a five-course dinner tableside, paired with wine, for individual tables of 10. Anita Chang, Design Consultant at Van Kirk & Sons, Inc. is the Fort Lauderdale Event Chair. This was one of the highlights of her speech:
“Obesity is the biggest driver of preventable chronic diseases and healthcare costs in the United States. Current obesity-related health care expenses are estimated nearly 21 percent of TOTAL annual medical spending in the US. Childhood obesity alone is responsible for 14 billion dollars.”
This program reaches 5000+ children each day, serves 300 Miami-Dade and Broward County after-school programs and community centers, and feeds over 1 million nutritious meals to underprivileged children.
Anita concluded her rousing speech by demonstrating the importance of this program in the community:
“There is a study which found that just a $10 investment per person in proven community-based program like FLIPANY, to increase physical activity and improve nutrition could save the country more than $16 billion annually within five years. Well, FLIPANY has been around 11 years… so let’s take the credit for helping to save the country 112 billion dollars and celebrate what a HUGE difference we’re making with your help, and with the support of all our volunteers and staff on a daily basis!”
Van Kirk is proud to support a program that does such important work in the South Florida community.
