March 20th, 2015
On Tuesday, January 13, 2015, we began digging a pool for a very deserving family with the help of Vanilla Ice and the Darrell Gwynn Foundation. On Friday, March 20, 2015, we completed that pool and Derek took his first dip.
Derek Avilez, a volunteer speaker for the Darrell Gwynn Foundation’s Education & Prevention Program, sustained a spinal cord injury while skim boarding at the beach with his family four years ago. Avilez was a firefighter and paramedic prior to his injury and the pool will assist him in is rehabilitation.
The Avilez family has received a 15’ x 30’ therapy pool specifically built to assist in Derek’s rehabilitation therapy. This pool is equipped with a zero entry ramp for easy pool access by wheelchair. At the end of the ramp there is an exercise bar that will allow Derek to stand and be surrounded by therapy jets to give his body a full massage. Near the stairs or an additional entry point there is another bar that allows him to stretch and complete exercises assigned by his therapy instructor. His fire department donated a special fire-hydrant that sprays out into the pool as a special added fun feature.
After the pool reveal, Derek brought out the skim board from his accident. Originally, the board was lost at sea as he was taken to the hospital. It was returned to him and he has kept it as a reminder ever since. Darrell Gwynn, Bobby Van Kirk, Tim Van Kirk, and Wes Cain all signed the board to commemorate the fact that it brought us together.
We, as a company, were honored and thrilled to get to know this family and give them something that will positively impact their lives.
